South Upper Lake lies just north of Smithtown Bay, with Wawatasso Island creating a natural divide between it and West Upper Lake. The maximum depth of South Upper Lake is 84 feet, with a B water quality rating by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. The water is generally good, but algae may limit swimming towards the end of the summer.

South Upper Lake is home to two well-known marinas: Howards Point Marina and Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club. Located just southwest of Howard PointHowards Point Marina provides a full range of services, including boat rentals, dock slips, and off-season storage. On Enchanted Island, the Upper Minnetonka Yacht Club offers dock space as well as sailing lessons, making it a hub for local sailing enthusiasts. While South Upper Lake itself does not have a public boat launch, convenient access is available nearby at the Spring Park Bay boat ramp. 

Amenities:

Just minutes from South Upper Lake is Crescent Beach, located on East Upper Lake. The beach offers a dock for swimmers and launches for kayaks and canoes. Crescent Beach is jointly owned and operated by the cities of Tonka Bay and Shorewood, and they have stationed lifeguards from noon until 5 pm every day.
