Tonka Bay

Tonka Bay’s roots begin with a love story and an apple. In the mid-1800s, Peter and Wealthy Gideon settled on 160 scenic acres along Lake Minnetonka, where they planted an apple orchard and developed the famed “Wealthy” apple, named in honor of Mrs. Gideon. Their land would later become the foundation for the city of Tonka Bay, officially established 50 years after their arrival. Today, Gideons Bay bears their name as a tribute to their legacy. This charming lakeside community still carries the warmth and character of its beginnings, blending rich history with the beauty of Lake Minnetonka.

Tonka Bay Highlights:

Tonka Bay is a beautiful lakeside community that blends rich history, scenic charm, and upscale living. Once home to the grand Tonka Bay Hotel, a 200-room resort that welcomed Minneapolis travelers in the late 1800s, the area has evolved while retaining its resort-like appeal. Today, the Tonka Bay Marina, one of the largest on Lake Minnetonka, stands on the hotel's former site, providing premier access to the lake. With more shoreline than any other city of its size, Tonka Bay is just one square mile in area but offers a rare combination of lakefront living and privacy. Over half of the 650 homes are directly on the water, and exclusive neighborhoods like Clay Cliffe and Gideon’s Point reflect the high demand for luxury lakeshore properties. The city also has a thriving creative community, with more artists and media professionals than 90% of U.S. cities, adding to its unique personality. Tonka Bay offers peace of mind along with lakeside elegance, making it one of the most desirable places to live in Minnesota.
