History:
Howard Point’s history dates back to 1853, when a group from New York founded the town of Excelsior. Over the next century, other townships and cities were established, including Tonka Bay and Deephaven. It wasn’t until 1974 that the city of Shorewood was finally declared independent of Excelsior. During the peak years of Lake Minnetonka tourism, Howard Point was home to the Hotel Edgewood. The inn was owned and operated by John W. Mann, the two-story structure overlooked Upper Lake Minnetonka. Hotel Edgewood had a long dock equipped with canoes and a boat house. Mann eventually sold the hotel in 1906 and built a home on the opposite side of the inn on Howard Point.
