Long Lake was settled in the early spring of 1855 by a group of Nova Scotian settlers and has prospered ever since. As part of the Orono School District, the City of Long Lake has a close relationship with Orono residents, and its businesses, amenities, and events have become part of daily life in Orono. One such event is The Orono Lions Club annual Snowball Open on the Lake each year in January, featuring 18 holes of icy golf on top of the frozen Lake.
Featuring abundant activities, The Nelson Lakeside Park on the southwestern side of the Lake features an expansive swimming beach, boat launches, a play area, and disc golf. Long Lake is also a well-known water skiing lake with limited boat activity and a long narrow approach for water skiing boats. The Lake features one lakeside restaurant Birches On The Lake, which offers everything from fine dining to craft beer.
