Located just north of Maple Plain, Lake Independence is relatively lightly developed with a mixture of 104 residential properties and several agricultural sites and is highly sought after for both its recreational value and its extraordinary fishery, which has a reputation for producing trophy muskelunge (muskies), as well as large northern pikes and walleyes. Community involvement in the lake comes through The Lake Independence Citizens Associationwhich protects Lake Independence’s water quality, natural beauty, fish, and wildlife habitat and encourages the lake’s use and enjoyment by all.

The Lake Independence Regional Trail on the East side of the lake connects Crow-Hassan Park Reserve, Baker Park Reserve, and the Luce Line State Trail. The 10-foot-wide and 15.9 miles long paved trail system offers walking, jogging, hiking, inline skating, and bicycling opportunities. A turf trail for horseback riding and hiking runs parallel within Baker Park Reserve, south of County Road 115.

Homes located on the lake are in the Orono School District.
