Wayzata

The word Wayzata is derived from a Lakota Sioux phrase meaning North Shore. The city is located in the North-East corner of Lake Minnetonka. Wayzata is one of the oldest cities on the lake. It was originally inhabited by the Dakota Indians, transferred ownership to Spain and then France, and was eventually sold to the United States of America from France in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

The city began growing in 1855 with new residents that created a local commerce hub by building a sawmill, blacksmith shop, and a hotel. James J. Hill and his western expansion of the railroad system helped grow Wayzata tourism by making it a popular summer destination for Minneapolis inhabitants. The city hasn't stopped growing since!
