Starting in 1879, expensive summer cottages began arising from the shores of Lake Minnetonka. At that time, Sunrise Point was home to one of the first hotels on Lake Minnetonka, the Lake Park Hotel. The four-story building had 200 rooms and a grand dining room. The hotel would bring in crowds with attractions like boating, fishing, dining, and tennis courts. The Lake Park Hotel eventually shut down in the 1890s, and Sunrise Point became a popular residential community.
