Minnetrista

The history of the area dates back to the 1850’s.  In 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux was signed organizing the territory of Minnesota and Minnetrista was included in this treaty. The Dakota Indians, who had previously resided in the area, left the area and the first European Settlers were not far behind.

Frank W. Halsted was one of the first notable early settlers in Minnetrista. He built a cottage on Lake Minnetonka on the bay that would eventually be his namesake- Halsteds Bay. Frank Halsted was a Captain in the Navy and left to fight in the Civil War. He returned with Distinction from the Navy, built a larger home, became a Justice of the Peace, and later solemnized the first marriage in Minnetrista. Fast forward 160 years, and Minnetrista is a thirty-square-mile city with a population of around 7,000 people.

Minnetrista has experienced a lot of growth in the past twenty years.

Minnetrista offers a unique proposal for its residents. While Lake Minnetonka has several of her bays in Minnetrista (Jennings Bay, Halstead Bay, Phelps Bay), the city also has other lakes that provide the Lake lifestyle without the Lake Minnetonka price tag. 

• The other lakes include Ox Yoke Lake, Whitetail Lake, Dutch Lake, and Saunders Lake.

A real gem in Minnetrista is the Gale Woods Farm. 

• Located on Whaletail Lake, Gale Woods Farm is a real working farm. The red barn of Gale Woods is practically a monument in Minnetrista.

• You can bike, boat, fish, hike, geocache, canoe, snowshoe, have a picnic or engage in educational farming with visits to the animals and collecting eggs or feeding the sheep, or cleaning the barn.

• They also offer gardening, farming, fiber arts, and cooking workshops. Gale Woods Farm is not to be missed!

Minnetrista operates its police department and is served by Mound Fire Department and St. Bonifacius Fire Department.
