Fred B. Snyder purchased the peaceful Locke Point in 1890. Snyder bought the 28 acres across from Tonka Bay City Hall for $56. He was a politician in Minneapolis and used the land of Locke Point to build a summer home. Like many city dwellers at the time, Snyder escaped the busy city in the summer to enjoy the beautiful waters of Lake Minnetonka. Eventually, the land was split and sold to developers in the 1970s. Locke Point officially became a residential community in 1976 with the opening of Clay Cliffe, the first gated community in Minnesota.
