Lafayette Ridge was built on land once occupied by the railroad mogul James J. Hill. He built the Lafayette Hotel in 1882 to capitalize on the area's increasing popularity; the hotel had 300 guest rooms and quickly became the center of Lake Minnetonka's social life. The hotel sat on the high ridge between Crystal Bay and Lafayette Bay; the hotel was shut down by Hill in 1897 and burned down in a fire later that year. Today, a rebuilt Lafayette Club stands where the hotel once was and offers amenities like indoor and outdoor pools, a golf course, tennis courts, and docks. Lafayette Ridge is within feet of where the historic St. Paul & Pacific Railroad ran over a century ago; the railroad was owned by Hill and dropped tourists off at destinations along the lake. The Lafayette Ridge neighborhood started construction in the early 1980s and completed its first house in 1986.
