Independence is a city located in Hennepin County. The town has a total area of 34.56 square miles, including 2.19 square miles on water.

  • Independence Township was formed in 1858, becoming the Village of Independence in 1957 and the City of Independence in 1974. The area was named by an excursionist, Kelsey Hinman, in 1881 in an ode to the Fourth of July. 

The city of Independence refers to itself as a “gem” of a “rural city in the heart of an exploding metropolis.” The rolling fields, wetlands, lakes, ponds, and unique homes make Independence a lovely city.

  • Some of the area’s most beautiful horse farms are located in Independence. The Zuhrah Shrine Horse Patrol has its farm facility in Independence. Also, the Twin Cities Polo Club is located in Independence and is open to the public to watch Polo matches.

  • Independence also has one of Minnesota’s top five golf courses- Windsong Farm Golf Club. This Tom Lehman-designed golf course has even received acclaim from Golf Digest Magazine.

  • YMCA operates Camp Iduhapi on Lake Independence. It is a popular summer camp for children all over the Midwest, and many local schools use the camp.

  • Another jewel of Independence is Baker Park Reserve. Baker Park Reserve offers 2,700 acres of natural landscape, a golf course (both 18 and 9 holes), camping, cross-country skiing, sledding, and so much more.  

Independence has no lakeshore on Lake Minnetonka, but it has three lakes of its own. 

  • Lake Independence is an 844-acre boatable lake with many homes on its shores. 

  • Lake Sarah is another lake in Independence and is 552 acres. This lake is primarily used for boating, fishing, and aesthetic viewing. Lake Sarah also has homes on its shores. 

  • Lake Rebecca is a 256-acre lake and is considered the geographical heart of the Three Rivers Park District. There is no lakeshore development on Lake Rebecca.
