Although Greenwood was officially founded in 1956, residents can be traced back to the 1840’s. When George Bertram traveled from New York to the Southern shores of Lake Minnetonka, he sought to create a village and farming community. He teamed up with a home builder, Robert McGrath, and began to construct homes in the original Excelsior township.

Greenwood Highlights:

Greenwood is a little city in Hennepin County with a population of roughly 750 people. The total square miles of the town is 0.61, with 0.25 of those square miles being on Lake Minnetonka.

  • Greenwood is one of the smallest Lake Minnetonka communities.

  • With its location on St. Albans Bay looking straight West, the sunsets are fantastic for the lakeshore properties.

  • Greenwood is within walking distance of downtown Excelsior and all that charming village offers.

For what it lacks in size, Greenwood makes up for in community.

  • The small population is focused on building community and enjoying the area. There is an annual 4th of July parade, outdoor concerts at the Old Log Theater, and a community-wide ice fishing group.

  • Greenwood Park is a common meeting place for Greenwood residents.

  • The Excelsior Fire District and the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department serve Greenwood. Violent crime is essentially non-existent in Greenwood and is safer than 80% of the cities nationwide.

For the non-lakeshore owners, Greenwood has 26 slips for boots at the St. Alban's Bay City Docks. There is a waiting list, but priority is given to non-lakeshore owners.

Old Log Theater, perhaps the most notable part of Greenwood's history, was opened in 1940 and continues entertaining guests with their plays. Old Log Theater has delighted over six million people since its doors opened.

Cast & Cru is the only restaurant located in Greenwood. It is connected to the Old Log Theater and is a farm-to-table restaurant!

Greenwood Marina is located in Greenwood and is the only marina on Lake Minnetonka with covered slips- an excellent tool in helping protect your boat from the elements.

  •  It's a full-service marina with gas, summer dockage, cleaning and detailing, and winter storage.

  • Owned and operated for over forty years by the same family and is located on the calm bay of St. Albans.

Greenwood is located within the Minnetonka School District. The Minnetonka Public School District is among the highest-performing school districts in Minnesota and the nation and proudly serves families in all or part of 10 communities: Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Victoria, and Woodland. In addition, students from 45 other Minnesota school districts attend Minnetonka schools through the state's Open Enrollment program.
