History:
Crosby Cove overlooks the historic Grays Bay, home to the head of the Minnehaha Creek. Minnesotans have treasured the creek's water sources for decades. Beginning in 1822, Joseph Renshaw Brown set out on Minnehaha Falls in a quest for the creek's undiscovered west end. Brown arrived at the creek's source in Grays Bay, documenting the first journey along Minnehaha Creek. Following Brown's voyage, several mills, including a flour mill, were built on the creek. In 1895 the first version of the Grays Bay Dam was made, drastically lowering the area's water level and shutting down mill production by 1897. An upgraded dam started construction in 1969. The dam is designed to mimic natural flooding patterns to account for weather changes. Which has already helped keep water in Minnehaha Creek during dry seasons. The dam finished construction in 1979 and has enhanced recreation and wildlife since then.
