History:
Predating 1906, Crane Island was a heron rookery until a storm took down most of its trees, and the herons migrated to its sister island, Wawatasso—Charles E. Woodward spent his summers in the nearby town of Mound. After the storm, he explored the island out of curiosity. He believed the land would be ideal for cottages, so he organized a group of 25 families and began building many private residential summer cottages on the island. Crane Island allowed the families to escape their busy lives in downtown Minneapolis to enjoy Lake Minnetonka's beauty. Each summer, the families would arrive by ferry or rowboat; then, in the fall, they would pack up their belongings and return to the city. The island became a designated historic district and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Today, the island still serves as a summer oasis for city dwellers and is a secular association that welcomes all.
