SHOREWOOD

The island city featuring
Enchanted, Shady and Spray Island

The city of Shorewood is located in Hennepin County. It is 6 miles long and one mile wide with over 3600 acres.  Shorewood has a population of roughly 8,000 people. The city of Shorewood encompasses three islands on Lake Minnetonka: Enchanted, Shady and Spray. Shorewood is nestled between the towns of Excelsior and Tonka Bay with a majority of its lakeshore on Gideon Bay.

Although Shorewood was officially founded in 1956, residents can be traced back to the 1840’s. When George Bertram traveled from New York to the Southern shores of Lake Minnetonka, he sought to create a village and farming community. He teamed up with a home builder, Robert McGrath, and began to construct homes in the original Excelsior township. The township originally included Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay and parts of Deephaven and Orono. As time went on, some of the areas started to break off from the Excelsior Township. Orono was the first one to break off and Greenwood and Shorewood were the last with their departures in 1956.

Shorewood was primarily a rural community when it first was founded. It included the shores of Lake Minnetonka and Christmas Lake. It thrived on tourism during the 19th century and enjoyed easy access from the trolley that ran from Minneapolis to Excelsior.

In 2016, MSN.com listed Shorewood as the richest town in Minnesota with a median household income of $113,719. The location and ease of access to Minneapolis makes this a popular location for commuters.

The city of Shorewood is served by the Excelsior Fire District and the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department. The islands are served by Mound Fire Department and SLMPD. Shorewood is an extremely safe place to call home with an almost non existent violent crime rate.
