The city of Minnetonka has a long history dating back to the mid 1800’s when it was a popular settlement due to its location along the Minnehaha Creek.  As time progressed and the establishment of the only saw west of the Mississippi River, Minnetonka saw its population grow.  Early settlers primarily came from New England and other Eastern states and brought with them the techniques to grow raspberries which later set up the success of Minnetonka’s neighboring city, Hopkins.

Fast forward a century or so and Minnetonka is still an innovator in commerce possessing the only mall in the Lake Minnetonka area, Ridgedale, and is home to some of Minnesota’s largest corporations such as Carlson Companies, Cargill and United Health.       

The city of Minnetonka was named Money Magazine’s “100 Best Places to Live in America” 2017. Mayor Schneider said, “The city’s economic stability, diverse housing market, excellent education options, city amenities and natural beauty all combine to make our community a desirable fit for people of all ages.”

Minnetonka has its own Police Department, Fire Department and City Hall. The large police force and multiple firehouse locations make Minnetonka a very community. Based on violent crime statistics, Minnetonka is safer than 86% of the cities in the United States.  

Minnetonka, with a population of roughly 50,000 people, is one of the largest Lake Minnetonka communities. The city is 28 square miles with over 1.29 square miles being on the water. With its location, Minnetonka on its most eastern border is only 8 miles from downtown Minneapolis making this a great location for the commuter. In contrast, its most western border running along all the lakeside communities of Wayzata, Woodland, Deephaven, Greenwood and Chanhassen. So whether you are interested in city living or being closer to the lake, there is sure to be an option to meet your needs.

SCHOOLS

The city of Minnetonka is served by three school districts: Hopkins, Minnetonka and Wayzata.  

Hopkins Public Schools is an award-winning school district that serves over 6,820 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Hopkins School District serves the cities of Hopkins, Minnetonka, Golden Valley, Eden Prairie, Edina, Plymouth and St. Louis Park.  

Hopkins School District has six elementary schools, one Chinese immersion school, two junior highs, and one high school. Hopkins is a popular choice amongst the parents with a recent survey indicating the 96% of parents rated the school education as excellent or good. In addition, over 84% of the Hopkins faculty possess a master’s degree or higher. Hopkins High SChool was named a 2017 Best High School that Challenges their Students to Excellence by the Washington Post.

Minnetonka School District is nationally recognized as one of the best school districts in the state. It currently has 10,600 students enrolled in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Minnetonka School District serves families in the Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Victoria and Woodland areas. 91% of Minnetonka High School students graduate are college bound and over 97% of the students who attend MHS graduate. The Minnetonka School District has six elementary schools including Spanish and Chinese immersion schools, two middle schools and one high school.

Wayzata School District serves the cities of Wayzata, Corcoran, Maple Grove, Medicine Lake, Medina, Minnetonka, Orono, and Plymouth. Oakwood Elementary was awarded the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award in 2017 recognizing the school's and District's commitment to excellence. In a recent community wide survey, 93% of the parent's of students rated the quality of education provided by Wayzata Schools as excellent.
